Architect Sanjay Puri shared his project to build a school in a rural part of Rajasthan. In the video, the reknowned architect draws the design on a simple plain paper while giving a point by point narration of the design sensibilities put in the design. He mentions, the entrance of the school would be from the southeast side and the northwest side would give an uninterrupted view of hills. There are hills located at the south side of the school as well. The lowest contour is of 102 meters and the highest point is of 108 meters. So, apart from the area from 102-108, the rest is flat area. This design was made so that the views of hills of both sides could be seen. The structure of the building was concentric and it’s built on the natural slope of the land.
According to Sanjay, economy was a key point in this project since it was being built on a remote location. So the goal was to build a design-led school building, keeping in mind the temperature and climate of Rajasthan, while sticking to a budget.
Sanjay spoke about the uniqueness of the design. The classrooms would be built on the contour area and there would be one courtyard in the middle of two classrooms. Students in each classroom would see the playground in the south through the courtyard. This would provide natural light along with making the air comfortable as well. The classes would be naturally cool just because of this unique design.
The entrance from the southeast directly led the students to the front portion of the contour where the classrooms were located. In the front section of the building, there would be an assembly hall, a library and administrative areas which would provide soothing views of the hills from the north. Then, in the middle section of the classrooms, there was a central spine that would gradually lead to the playground. It was a sheltered space that could be a hub for students. 50 percent of the land area had been taken to make the playground portion for all sports purposes.
This project was meant for children from 12 remote villages of Rajasthan where education was not accessible. Here’s a look at the video of the final outcome of Sanjay Puri’s ambitious and aesthetic design.
