The most elegant residential area in Barcelona, Turó Park, is home to some interior design gems. Alex March Studio recently completed the interior design for a 260 sq. m. home in Barcelona, Spain.

The owner wanted to give the home a renewed and refreshed look. "My client wanted to have another relationship with her space, an inspiring, timeless, elegant, cheerful, balanced home, with soul and character," explains Alex March. He further highlights the owner’s artistic sensitivity, saying, "She is in love with art and, in particular, with the works of the Spanish artist Iñaki Moreno." In addition, preserving, restoring, and rejuvenating the pre-existing elements of the 1920s farmhouse was a priority in this project.

Mediterranean style with European and African influences

The essence of the house is embodied by clear Mediterranean influences, creating a warm and lively atmosphere, enriched with a blend of European and ethnic influences, mainly African. The interior design of this house is characterised by strong use of colour, a common feature in the work of Alex March Studio.

Also common is the blend of styles and eras, as well as the balanced selection of unique pieces of art and design. For this house, a combination of furniture and decorative elements was chosen, which included figurative art, surrealism expressionism, abstraction, craftsmanship, and numerous pieces of unique furniture. Some of these pieces are unique, belonging to authors practically unknown today, while others are from iconic Catalan, Iberian, and European authors of the 20th century.

Exclusive lamps were designed for the project by Omar Sherzad (Omalight) and most of the paintings bear the imprint of contemporary artist Iñaki Moreno. The carpets are made of Iranian wool (Turkestan) and the plants (Casa Protea) provide a touch of freshness in every room.

Surrealism in the centre of the room

Undoubtedly, the centrepiece of the room is the large table sculpture ‘Leda’ designed by Salvador Dalí from BD Ediciones. It is a 190 cm long brass coffee table with a hand-shaped foot and leg with a heeled shoe, on which rests an egg in Carrara marble, a design taken from the 1935 painting ‘Femme à tête de roses’, thanks to the extreme detail in Dalí's work.

The house exudes an atmosphere of elegance and passion for art and design, especially in the living room and dining room. The central wall of the living room features a pair of black and white paintings that add agility and dynamism to the space. The sofa has been strategically placed away from the light, creating an intimate and cosy effect. Next to the sofa is a white table with a unique piece designed by Alex March himself, a table lamp of the Bach series, designed by Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá in 1970.

For the opposite side of the room, a cabinet designed by the renowned French architect and designer Charlotte Perriand in 1958, acquired from Antigues Matèries, has been chosen. To give this piece the importance it deserves, only two decorative pieces have been placed on it — a painting made from original pieces by the Italian artist Piero Fornasetti and a sculpture by Julio Bono. The natural wood floor has been covered with an Iranian wool carpet to create a warmer atmosphere.

An eclectic-style dining room

Like the living room, natural light bathes the entire dining area. The starting point is a base of raw walls, with a solid oak wood floor. The carpentry has been left in the original wood; it has only been pickled and varnished transparently to showcase its organic beauty.

The iconic Batlló bench designed by Antoni Gaudí acts as a majestic connecting thread between the living room and the dining room. It is a faithful and numbered reproduction of one of the original pieces of furniture designed for Casa Batlló’s main dining room, produced by BD Ediciones. On this bench, a painting from the 70s by an unknown author, adds colour to the space and harmonises with the rest of the elements.

The dining table, in natural wood, is a 1960s design by Jordi Vilanova. This piece of pure lines and dark tonality contrasts with the white abstract shapes of the Houdini chairs with arms, iconic pieces designed by Stefan Diez. Every decorative detail is worth admiring in this house, such as the exceptional vases on the Is-Dher table by HE Shk. Hind Majid Al Qassimi for BD Barcelona, three connected vases in glazed stoneware in three different finishes — 24-carat gold, platinum and a beige engobe.

A bedroom between Africa and the Mediterranean

Far from opulence, the bedroom is a haven of calm and balance that offers a restful atmosphere. The absence of curtains, in addition to providing a very natural aesthetic, aligns with the homeowner’s preference of waking up with the sunrise.

It is committed to a colour palette that encompasses white, raw tones, and different brown hues of natural wood. African influences are achieved with pieces such as the wooden floor lamp ‘Phare’ by Omalight and a sculpture by José Berlanga (1981).

The timeless classic of 20th-century design, the Bauche 1946 armchair by Charlotte Perriand, made of wood and straw, adds a rustic touch to the room, along with a 50s solid wood stool.
